Yujay Ramakrishnan (FRCS ORL-HNS, MA Cantab, MB BChir)

Yujay is a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head of ENT service based at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.  His practice is dedicated to rhinology (sinus and rhinoplasties) and skull base surgery.  He provides advice on complex cancer and non-cancer cases regionally within Nottinghamshire. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2001. He trained in Cambridge, Newcastle and London before completing his ear, nose and throat (ENT) Specialist training in the Northern deanery. He is fellowship trained is both cosmetic and anterior skull base surgery.  He publishes widely and conducts research in sinusitis as well as smell and taste disorders.

Rishi Srivastava

Rishi is a consultant specialising in complex ear disease and benign head and neck conditions. He trained in Yorkshire and gained a postgraduate medical doctorate in head and neck cancer. He came to Nottingham for otology fellowship training and was then invited to stay and join the department as a consultant. He enjoys multi-disciplinary working and advancing clinical practice, and is leading the development of the trans-nasal oesophagoscopy service in the ENT setting. Indeed, he is one of few ENT consultants with this skill, and plans to utilise this as a way of assessing patients with swallowing/throat/voice problems presenting to the ENT service. He is passionate about high quality patient care, and is the departmental lead for clinical audit, as well as the clinical governance lead for ENT and audiology.

Sam Cho

Sam is an adult and paediatric consultant ENT surgeon sub-specialising in otology, auditory implants and lateral skull base. He is also an Honorary Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Medical School and the mortality and morbidity lead for the department. Sam graduated from the University of Nottingham and completed his higher surgical training in ENT in the East Midlands region. He subsequently completed a post-training fellowship in otology, auditory implants and lateral skull base at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and Birmingham Children's Hospital. Sam is passionate about pursuing optimal hearing outcomes for patients and undertook a visiting fellowship at the world renowned Causse Ear Clinic in Beziers, France. His areas of interest include balance disorders, hearing restoration surgery including cochlear implants, chronic ear conditions and lateral skull base tumours such as vestibular schwannomas. Sam is a passionate trainer and has set up a training lab utilising virtual reality temporal bone simulators for trainees in the East Midlands region. Sam delivers regular teaching for medical students, trainee surgeons and allied health care professionals locally and nationally.

Mat Daniel MMEd MA(Coaching) PhD

Mat is a Consultant Paediatric Otorhinolaryngologist. He trained in the East Midlands and in Sydney, and obtained a PhD in the fields of Glue Ear microbiology / biofilms and drug delivery. He is involved in a variety of research projects, including basic science research and clinical trials, and collaborates with researchers, clinicians and industry across the UK and abroad. He is involved in the running of national ENT research and academic societies, and was the very first honorary secretary of the British Otorhinolaryngology and Allied Sciences Research Society. He has a Masters in Medical Education, and is the undergraduate lead for ENT at The University of Nottingham. He is also a qualified coach and uses coaching to develop those around him. His clinical practice is dedicated to the care of children with ENT problems, dealing with common conditions like sleep apnoea and glue ear, and specialising in paediatric airway disorders such as stridor, tracheostomy, laryngomalacia (floppy larynx), inhaled foreign bodies, and other emergency conditions. He works closely with paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, with other paediatricians caring for children with complex needs, and is part of the cleft palate multidisciplinary team. Putting children first is at the centre of everything that he does.

Reza Nouraei

Reza Nouraei is the Robert White Professor of Laryngology at Southampton University and a Consultant Laryngologist and Tracheal Surgeon at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. His clinical practice is dedicated to the care of adult patients with complex airway, voice, throat, and swallowing problems. This includes caring for patients with abnormal narrowing of the larynx and trachea (laryngotracheal stenosis), the full range of voice problems from suspected and early laryngeal cancer to elite performers.  He has described a number of new surgical procedure to improve the outcome of this complex condition including the “Combined Glottic Reconstruction” procedure which has proven very useful for treating post-COVID airway problems. In 2015, along with Anil Patel, Reza help discover, describe and deploy Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE), which is now a global standard of care for managing difficult and life-threatening airway emergencies. As well as offering the full spectrum of surgical laryngology for airway, voice, and swallowing problems, during his laryngology fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, he received highly specialised training in Transnasal Endoscopy for evaluating throat and oesophageal problems.  He was also trained in, and performs office-based laryngology techniques like transnasal tracheoscopies, office-based injections (Botulinum toxin, steroids, and fillers), as well as laser surgery and dilation of strictures. He has published two textbooks in Laryngology, multiple book chapters, and over 100 peer-reviewed papers.  He has had a long-standing in big data analytics and machine-learning.  He is the national outcomes evaluation lead for the GIRFT programme and the national clinical lead for the ENT expert working group at the National Casemix Office.

Anand Kasbekar BMedSci, DOHNS, FRCS (ORL-HNS), DM

Anand Kasbekar is a Consultant ENT Surgeon & Neurotologist (Adult & Children), and Honorary Assistant Professor at Nottingham University Hospitals / Nottingham University. Anand completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Nottingham (2003) before being trained as an adult and paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon in London, Cambridge, Glasgow and Liverpool. This included a year at the renowned Alder Hey Children's hospital undertaking complex ENT surgery. Anand has undertaken visiting fellowships at Stanford University (California), the House Clinic (Los Angeles, USA) and Radboud UMC (Nijmegen, Netherlands). He has undertaken a post-training specialist fellowship in all types of hearing implants, chronic ear conditions, cholesteatoma, balance disorders and Neurotology at the world famous Otology/Skull base unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is one of two stapedectomy surgeons in the region. He gained a Doctorate in Medicine undertaken at Cambridge University Hospitals in collaboration with the Medical Research Council. He undertakes his research at the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. Anand runs training courses for ENT doctors and also teaches on various national ENT courses.

Doug Hartley

Doug is Consultant Otologist and a Professor at the University of Nottingham. He has a specialist interest in conditions of the ear, including hearing and balance disorders in adults and children, and is a surgeon with the Nottingham Auditory Implant Program. Doug completed his medical training and qualified with distinction from Newcastle University in 1995. During his subsequent training in Oxford, he undertook pioneering research in the fields of glue ear and cochlear implantation and was awarded a DPhil from Oxford University in 2001. He spent time as a Surgical Fellow at the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre. Doug also leads the Objective measures group at the National Institute for Health Research Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. Their pioneering work involves bringing hearing research into clinical practice has been widely published in international scientific journals and he has contributed to over £30 million in grant funding. During the COVID19 pandemic, Doug and his team developed a novel form of personal protective equipment (PPE) for cochlear implant surgery that was adopted widely. Doug is also heavily involved in postgraduate teaching and training and recently received the Royal Society of Medicine’s award for the best work in Otology.

Priya Achar MS (ENT), DNB (ENT), MSc, FRCS (ORL-HNS)

Priya Achar is a Consultant neurotologist. She is a core member of the Nottingham Auditory Implant programme and Skull Base multidisciplinary team in Nottingham delivering high quality patient care. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate training from Mumbai University in India and acquired further postgraduate training in ENT in Liverpool (Health Education North West Deanery). She has undertaken two U.K. fellowships:

1.  Complex Otology and Auditory Implant fellowship in Guys and St Thomas, London

2.  Lateral SkullBase and Auditory Implant fellowship in Manchester

She has completed her Masters in Healthcare science and practice from University of Central Lancashire. She participates in teaching medical school students of Nottingham University. Her areas of interest include hearing restoration with cochlear implants, bone conducting devices, middle ear implants, stapes surgery & ossiculoplasty; management of lateral skull base tumours such as vestibular schwannomas; management of cholesteatoma involving middle ear and skull base; and balance disorders such as Ménière’s disease, BPPV and vestibular migraine.

Liz Shipman

Paediatric ENT Specialist Nurse. Liz has worked in Nottingham since completing nurse training in Leeds, gaining a Bachelor of Science with honours in healthcare studies in 2012. She started working on children’s ENT ward in 2000. Liz has also had experience with other surgical specialties and some time on critical care unit before helping set up new role as Paeds ENT nurse specialist, which is still evolving. Liz’s current role has developed nurse lead clinics, both face to face and virtual, to support the medical team to release time for them to see new or more complex patients. Seeing patients with recurrent tonsillitis for surgery, telephone follow-up for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea who have had adenotonsillectomy and advice line to help and support families and hope to reduce admission or if no the length of stay. Another part of her role is to see all patients with tracheostomies, supporting families and hospital staff from preparation, post-operative care and training through to contact for any concerns when at home.
